SVM
Supporting UW Veterinary Care and Its Success

Dean Markel

Strategic Priority Five focuses on supporting UW Veterinary Care in achieving its strategic priorities while enhancing its integration within the school. Following the completion of the school’s strategic plan, Dr. Ruthanne Chun and her administrative group began a strategic planning exercise for UW Veterinary Care. This planning process is scheduled to be completed by April 1, 2014, and the School of Veterinary Medicine is dedicated to integrating UW Veterinary Care’s strategic priorities with its own.

It is critical that the school maintains a close and strategic partnership with UW Veterinary Care in order to deliver the outstanding clinical service that clients deserve and expect and to educate students at the very highest level. This partnership is also vital for the success of our residents and interns who are such an important part of our hospital while also being trained as the next generation of specialists and academicians in veterinary medicine. Additionally, UW Veterinary Care serves as the principal resource for the clinical research that is critical to the school’s future success. The school will remain focused on how to provide the necessary resources, whether equipment, space, or faculty, for UW Veterinary Care to excel in the coming decades.

As part of this process, Ed Rodriguez, our chief financial officer, is performing a systematic audit and financial analysis of UW Veterinary Care to optimize its financial structure. In addition, Ruthanne Chun, Kristi Thorson, and Ed Rodriguez will review and optimize UW Veterinary Care’s administrative structure in the coming months. Last, the school has begun planning for a feasibility study to determine the scale and scope of a new building in Lot 62 that would likely encompass an expanded small animal hospital in order to better serve our students and clients.

Below you’ll find UW Veterinary Care’s mission and vision statements, fundamental principles, and a draft of strategic priorities that will be its focus in the coming five to seven years, followed by details of the school's related fifth strategic priority.
