Strengthening Research...and a Bump in the Road

Dean Markel

As some of you may have read last week, the School of Veterinary Medicine’s proposal to strengthen our financial position through a tuition increase was tabled. As a backdrop, our resident and nonresident tuition is the least expensive in the Big Ten and is either the least expensive in the country (nonresident tuition) or among the least expensive in the country (resident). In fact, our current nonresident DVM tuition is less than nonresident undergraduate tuition on the UW-Madison campus.

Our proposed tuition increase was meant to fund many of the educational initiatives and support of research activities that are critical to the future success of the school. These ranged from our selectives curriculum to our core competency module creation to support of both basic and clinical research within the School of Veterinary Medicine and UW Veterinary Care.

On a positive front, we are working with the UW-Madison campus to find alternative funding sources, and I remain hopeful that this will allow us to begin implementing many of these new initiatives. I also remain committed to working with the UW-Madison campus and UW System to justify the need and benefit of our proposed tuition increases not only to our students but also to our faculty and staff.

Strategic Priority 2 of our Strategic Plan focuses on strengthening our programs in basic and translational research. In order to achieve this goal, we have developed seven initiatives, with Dale Bjorling serving as the executive sponsor for the overall strategic priority.

One of the great strengths of the School of Veterinary Medicine and the UW-Madison campus is the outstanding research conducted by our faculty, staff, and students. Continuing to build upon this strength will be an important part of our focus in the coming years. Please feel free to contact Dale or the initiative leads if you would like to contribute.
